Boppy vs. My Brest Friend

Are you trying to choose a nursing pillow? Not sure which one you’d like? I’ve tried the 2 most popular ones, Boppy and My Brest Friend. Let me tell you what I think about each.

I got the Boppy with my first child. At the time, I thought it was the only nursing pillow and a must-have baby item. I loved it. It is perfect for getting your arms into the perfect position for nursing your baby. It is comfortable to use when sitting in your glider, or on the couch. In bed, it can be comfortable if you have many pillows behind your back and are sitting up straight.

  • I have 3 covers for it. The one it came with (Sweet Pea) was my least favorite because the cotton was stiff and rough. My second favorite was made with cotton that felt like your favorite t-shirt. My favorite was the Soft Boa cover because it was so soft and held up the best to multiple washings.
  • Speaking of washings, I had to wash the Boppy pillow more than I would have liked because milk and spit-up would leak through the covers onto the pillow. They now make a Water Resistant Protective Cover that you put on the pillow underneath the regular cover. I highly recommend this. It saves you from having to wash your Boppy pillow so many times. When you do wash your Boppy, throw a few tennis balls into the dryer to fluff it.
  • After 9 months, I noticed the pillow began to sag in the middle. Because of this, I looked at getting a new pillow when I was pregnant with my second child. I first considered getting a new Boppy. I wondered if the reason it sagged was because the Boppy I received at my baby shower had a “Miracle Middle Insert.” I thought that since I didn’t need the extra room the insert provided, maybe if I bought a “regular” Boppy pillow the sagging would not occur. I contacted the company to find out why my pillow began to sag, and if this was supposed to happen. The representative from the company told me the pillow is only supposed to last a year and that now (2 years later) ALL of the Boppy pillows contain a Miracle Middle Insert (even though they no longer mention this in the product description). I was shocked that a nursing pillow at this price was only supposed to last a year when many moms nurse longer than a year. So, I decided to look at the competition: My Brest Friend.
  • The feature I liked most about My Brest Friend was that the pillow would wrap all the way around me, so that I could stand up and still comfortably nurse my baby. Knowing that I would be getting up a lot more with my second baby to tend to my 2 year-old, this was very important. I also liked that the MBF cover had a pocket for storing my cell phone, itzbeen timer, Chapstick and bottle of water (all nursing essentials!) Also, because this pillow was made of dense styrofoam-like material, I wouldn’t need to wash it, and I assumed it wouldn’t sag in the middle like the Boppy. Plus, it was cheaper than the Boppy, so it made it easier to swallow the expense of a new nursing pillow.
  • I decided to try the Deluxe pillow, which as far as I could tell, meant it had a cover made out of a material similar to the velour Boppy cover, just not as soft. I got an extra Deluxe cover so I could have a backup when one was in the wash.
  • I ended up having an emergency c-section, so I was unable to use this pillow for the first few weeks. It rested on my incision so it was uncomfortable. Once I was able to try it, I liked the versatility of MBF, at first. However, the feature they promote most was the reason I didn’t like MBF: the lumbar support. The part against my back actually made me very uncomfortable any time I was sitting. My back hurt long after I was done nursing my baby. I used this pillow only a few times before returning to my Boppy. I fluffed it up as best I could, and it works fine, just not the same as it was when I first got it.

Each nursing pillow has its benefits and drawbacks, so you must decide what is important to you. If I knew I was going to be standing the whole time I was nursing my baby, My Brest Friend would be a great choice. However, as most of us all know, it is most comfortable to sit and snuggle up with your baby when you nurse. So, for me, Boppy is the winner even though it loses its shape in a short period of time.

I am a stay-at-home mom of a toddler girl and baby boy. We like to take walks, go to the park, bake, color, visit family and friends... I have a wonderful husband who supports my life dream to stay home with my children. It's not an easy job, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. I think to be successful at breastfeeding, you need to have a very supportive person you feel comfortable discussing all the trials and tribulations that come along with it. For me, that person is my mom, who also stayed home and nursed me and my four siblings.
